Scope of the conference
The conference brings together people, perspectives and practices from around the world on play, with a focus on the Indian experience. Traditional societies have a rich heritage of games and diverse cultural practices that provide opportunities for its members to develop their intrinsic interests and competencies, learn social skills and behaviours, regulate and express their emotions, socialise and experience joy. In addition, several innovative play initiatives have emerged in the area of child and youth development work, especially in the context of living with poverty, marginalisation, conflicts and other adverse conditions. Several other play-based initiatives seek to enhance learning outcomes, social domain goals or bring about change using play and creative mediums. While some of these people, perspectives and practices are well-known and celebrated, a vast majority of them are not known. The objective of the conference is to bring together these voices, to celebrate them, to learn from them and to begin the path towards assimilating them to further the knowledge on how play facilitates fuller lives, mediates active learning and better change outcomes.

International Play Association (IPA) works to protect, preserve and promote children's right to play as a fundamental human right. It was established in 1961 in Denmark and is currently being housed in the UK. The IPA has members in nearly 60 countries and has been working for more than 50 years to secure every child’s right to play and to promote healthy, high quality play opportunities and environments. It was initiated in response to the growing urbanization and shrinking play space for children. With the inclusion of Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, recognition of play as a right of the child has been accorded its rightful place in the life of the child. IPA has a consultative status with UN Economic and Social Council and UNICEF.

International Play Association (IPA)–India was initiated in the 1970s and has members interested in and working with promoting play in children. Concerned professionals in the field of child development, psychology and social work and other interested individuals have been involved. Surveys and development of Municipal parks and Play Grounds was initiated in Mumbai. The landmark achievement was the installation of low cost innovative play equipment at the Municipal park in Goregoan, Mumbai. More recently NGOs like Magic Bus, India; Sadhana School, Pune; Jhamghat Ventures, Delhi; Headstreams, Bengaluru; Butterflies, New Delhi and Latika Roy Foundation, Dehradun, have contributed significantly to promoting play among children. Architects like Sudeshna Chatterjee (through the Kaimal Chaterjee and Associates, New Delhi), Kabir Vajpeyi (Delhi) and Kirti Bhonsale (Nagpur) have played a significant role in planning available urban spaces for children's play. More organisations and individuals are joining the movement to secure and promote children's right to play as a fundamental human right.
Currently, the IPA-India is anchored in the Centre for Human Ecology, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Deonar, Mumbai.

Headstreams started in 2008. It was founded by a team of community development experts, educationists and mental health professionals.  It focuses on promoting self-reliance and facilitating community development through promotion of creative learning skills to enhance positive mental health. Headstreams has been recognised as one of the leading pioneers in re-imagining learning and innovative education practices.
Headstreams creates safe play spaces within low-income communities with the participation of youth from within the area and surrounding neighbourhoods. Using principles of play, youth are trained to be co-creators and facilitators in a play environment that provides security and fosters cooperation and empathetic exploration, through creative means and healthy social interactions. The youth volunteers, who often become role models for the children, are equipped with skills to engage the children creatively through play, using media such as games, theatre, art and craft, music, dance, story-telling and reading. These media provide avenues for meaningful interaction between the children and the volunteers, to jointly explore relevant psycho-social challenges.
